Young Europeans is new project that enables senior primary schools to learn about Europe and celebrate their knowledge in a Europe Day showcase on 9 May 2010. The project is led by the Inservice Education unit at St Patrick's College, Drumcondra and Hyperion, Cork.

Young Europeans is part of the Communication Europe Initiative (CEI) which was established in 1995 to raise awareness about the European Union and to improve the quality and accessibility of public information on European issues.

The European Union plays a central role in several aspects of Irish life on a day-to-day basis and many aspects of what we do are influenced by the EU. This influence ranges from its central role in the economic success that Ireland has enjoyed in recent years to its impact on social, employment and environmental standards.

Yet despite the importance of the EU and its relevance in our daily life, the European Union can sometimes seem remote.

The Program for Government 2007-2012 contains a commitment by the Government to improve the quality of communications between the EU and its citizens and as part of that commitment, to assist local events commemorating Europe Day on 9 May.

Europe Day is commemorated throughout the European Union each year to mark the historic declaration made by Robert Schumann on 9 May in 1950 which inspired the development of the European Union.
